The Mexican-American War is mostly a forgotten one. Today, if it is taught at all, it is taught as a prelude to the civil war. Ulysses Grant said that “The Southern rebellion was largely the outgrowth of the Mexican war. Nations, like individuals, are punished for their transgressions.” The war divided the nation and served as the school for the larger conflict to come: 336 Federal and Confederate Generals served . . .
